Scroll Depth Tracking

Question: Does Parse.ly offer Scroll Depth tracking?

Short answer: Yes, but not in the way you might expect.

Current Offerings & Alternatives

As of now, we don’t offer Scroll Depth tracking by default. This is because we believe Engaged Time is a better measure of engagement than scroll depth. But there’s nothing stopping you from sending us scroll depth event data with dynamic tracking.

Dashboard

While you may be able to send us scroll depth information, we have no place in the Parse.ly dashboard for displaying this data. Instead you may sort by metrics like “total engaged minutes” and “average engaged time”.

Top 6 posts from arstechnica.com of December 2023 sorted by average engaged time. The Context column also displays the total number of visitors and total engaged minutes for this time period. We offer engaged time as an alternative to scroll depth tracking.

Data Pipeline

Parse.ly’s Data Pipeline (DPL) is a premium add-on feature that’s suitable for teams with experienced data scientists. If that sounds like you, then you could also read the scroll depth data that you’re sending us and use it in any way that you like. Contact your Relationship Manager for more details or read our DPL documentation.

We want to hear from you!

Just because Scroll Depth is not available in the Dashboard doesn’t mean that we won’t ever consider it. If this is priority for you, please contact your Relationship Manager to discuss your use case. The more feedback we receive, the better we can fulfill your needs.

If you have any technical questions, please contact Support.
