#  Conversion examples

A conversion occurs when a [visitor](https://docs.parse.ly/measuring-reporting-performance/calculations/visitors/)
takes a desired action on your website: A purchase, a sign-up, a download, etc. 
In conversion data in the [Parse.ly Dashboard](https://docs.parse.ly/dashboard/),
there are set [conversion types](https://docs.parse.ly/dashboard/conversions-tab/#h-conversion-actions-types-and-labels),
as well as custom conversion labels, that can be used to filter and track data. 
The following are examples of possible conversion situations and their corresponding
types and labels.

## Affiliate link click

A publication has a round-up of the best credit cards for travelers, receiving revenue
for every click sent to a credit card company’s website.

**Conversion action:** Visitor clicks a link to an American Express landing page.

 * Conversion type: Link Click.
 * Conversion label: “American Express click.”

**Conversion action:** Visitor clicks a link to a Chase Bank landing page.

 * Conversion type: Link Click.
 * Conversion label: “Chase click.”

## Internal link click

Rather than use conversions for internal link click tracking, Parse.ly recommends
relying on the Internal category on the [Referrers tab](https://docs.parse.ly/dashboard/referrers-tab/).

## Free trial start

A company offers a 30-day free trial of their product and would like to track how
popular this offering is.

**Conversion action:** Visitor creates a trial account.

 * Conversion type: Lead Capture.
 * Conversion label: “Trial account created.”

## Content download

A company publishes two ebooks: “50 Tips for Working Remotely” and “Communicating
with Coworkers.” To download either, visitors input their name, email address, and
company name.

**Conversion action:** Visitor downloads the “50 Tips for Working Remotely” ebook.

 * Conversion type: Lead Capture.
 * Conversion label: “Ebook – remote work tips.”

**Conversion action:** Visitor downloads the “Communicating with Coworkers” ebook.

 * Conversion type: Lead Capture.
 * Conversion label: “Ebook – coworker communication.”

## Event registration

A company offers free webinars and networking events. To register, visitors input
their name, email address, and company name.

**Note**

If an event requires purchasing a ticket, Parse.ly recommends tracking those conversions
with the Purchase conversion type.

**Conversion action:** Visitor registers for a free webinar.

 * Conversion type: Lead Capture.
 * Conversion label: “Webinar – content marketing tips.”

**Conversion action:** Visitor buys a ticket to a paid networking event.

 * Conversion type: Purchase.
 * Conversion label: “Networking – NYC meetup.”

## Newsletter sign-ups

A publication sends a daily round-up newsletter and several newsletters about different
topics.

**Conversion action:** Reader subscribes to a round-up of daily news.

 * Conversion type: Newsletter Signup**.**
 * Conversion label: “Daily newsletter.”

**Conversion action:** Reader subscribes to the parenting newsletter.

 * Conversion type: Newsletter Signup.
 * Conversion label: “Parenting newsletter.”

## Magazine subscription

A publication offers two types of subscription products: “Digital Only” and “Print
+ Digital.”

**Conversion action:** Reader subscribes to “Digital Only.”

 * Conversion type: Subscription.
 * Conversion label: “Digital Only.”

**Conversion action:** Reader subscribes to “Print + Digital.”

 * Conversion type: Subscription.
 * Conversion label: “Print and Digital.”

## Ticket purchase

A company sells tickets to concerts and sporting events.

**Conversion action:** Visitor buys a concert ticket.

 * Conversion type: Purchase.
 * Conversion label: “Concert ticket.”

**Conversion action:** Visitor buys a sporting event ticket.

 * Conversion type: Purchase.
 * Conversion label: “Sports ticket.”
